Hail Repair in Grain Valley, MO

Grain Valley logs fewer hail reports than most of the metro, yet a big share of them are golf ball size. See what NOAA logged near Grain Valley and what PDR can fix.

Grain Valley does not log much hail, but a large share of what it logs is big. NOAA's Storm Prediction Center (SPC) counted 77 reports of hail at 1 inch or larger within 10 miles of the city from 2010 to 2025. Only three of the 20 cities in our metro data show fewer. Yet 14 of Grain Valley's 29 hail days reached golf ball size, 1.75 inches. That ties Gladstone and Lee's Summit for the most golf ball days on the Missouri side. Gladstone needed 164 reports to get there. Out here along Interstate 70, the size of the hail matters more than the count.

Big hail on few reports

A report is a single observation of hail, sized by the largest stone seen and often judged by eye. One storm can leave many reports, or none if nobody sees it.

Of Grain Valley's 77 reports, 27 reached golf ball size or larger. That works out to about 35 percent. Five reached baseball size, 2.75 inches, and all five came on September 18, 2010. The top stone that day measured 5.5 inches, and 14 reports came in.

A small count can still hold many big days. A golf ball day needs only one report at that size. On six of those days here, SPC logged two reports or fewer. Those days left a thin record, but each left at least one large stone.

SPC's most recent 1 inch report near Grain Valley came on September 16, 2025.

Nine reports in March 2024

After the 2010 storm, the busiest golf ball day near Grain Valley was March 12, 2024. SPC logged nine reports, topping out at 2 inches. Blue Springs logged six that day and Lee's Summit five.

April 3, 2011, logged only two reports near Grain Valley, but the larger stone reached 2.5 inches. On May 26, 2016, seven reports came in, topping out at 2 inches. August 12, 2021, matched that count, peaking at golf ball size.

Earlier springs left their own marks. March 27, 2014, brought five reports. Then came a late winter pair in 2017. On February 28, three reports came in, the largest at golf ball size. On March 6, three more arrived with the same top size.

The quiet entries count too. June 18, 2011, June 26, 2016, and July 19, 2018, each logged a single report. Each of those still reached golf ball size, and the July stone reached 2 inches. October 11, 2023, brought two more, topping out at golf ball size. Blue Springs was the only other city with golf ball hail that day.

Split between March and September

March leads Grain Valley with 19 reports. September follows with 15, then May with 13 and April with nine. August holds eight. June has five, while February and July show three each. October has two. November through January are empty.

The two leading months tell different stories. March spreads its hail across several years, and 17 of its 19 reports came on three golf ball days. September is one storm. Fourteen of its 15 reports fell on September 18, 2010, and the last came on September 16, 2025.

April is the odd gap. Grain Valley logged just nine April reports, fewer than in March or May. Next door in Blue Springs, April holds 16.

So expect a spring season every year, and respect September for the rare year it turns severe.

Next door to Blue Springs

Grain Valley sits in eastern Jackson County, on Interstate 70. Blue Springs borders it to the west. Oak Grove lies farther east along the same highway. To the west, Interstate 70 runs on through Blue Springs and Independence toward Kansas City. Independence and Lee's Summit sit beyond Blue Springs, to the northwest and southwest.

The crew comes out to Grain Valley and works on the car where it is parked. That might be a driveway, an office lot or a spot near the interstate.

Blue Springs, next door, shares 13 of Grain Valley's 14 golf ball days. The one it missed was June 26, 2016. Independence logged 16 reports from the 2010 storm.

Sorting the dents at the estimate

When a third of the hail is golf ball size, more dents can land near the limits of PDR. Cracked paint, stretched metal and sharp creases are the usual reasons a dent may not come out fully. A dent on a panel edge or a braced seam can hold out too. You hear which of yours fall there before any work starts. Can PDR fix every hail dent? goes deeper, and what PDR cannot fix lists each case. Hail Repair Questions in Grain Valley

A golf ball day needs just one report at 1.75 inches or more. On six of Grain Valley's 14 golf ball days, SPC logged two reports or fewer. Each of those days still had at least one stone that size. Fewer people may report hail out here, too. The record counts what observers saw, so it can miss hail that fell unseen.

March is the steadier one. Its 19 reports came across several years, and 17 of them fell on golf ball days in 2014, 2017 and 2024. September holds 15, but 14 came on September 18, 2010, the day of the 5.5 inch stone. So March is the month that repeats. September is the month that once delivered the worst day on file.
