Hail Repair in Overland Park, KS

Overland Park gets golf ball hail more often than any city in the metro data. Here is the NOAA record, and what it means for the dents on your car.

Overland Park leads our metro data in golf ball hail days, yet not one report near it has reached baseball size. NOAA's Storm Prediction Center (SPC) logged golf ball size hail within 10 miles of the city on 22 separate days from 2010 to 2025. Lenexa is second with 20. So the story here is frequency, not giant stones. Fourteen of the 16 years on file include at least one golf ball day. If you park in Overland Park, the record says hail that size is a regular visitor. This page shows when it fell, how often and what paintless repair does with dents that size.

Never once at baseball size

From 2010 to 2025, Overland Park's file shows 153 reports of 1 inch hail or larger. They came on 45 days. Each report logs one observation and the biggest stone in it, a size that is often eyeballed rather than measured. A busy storm can send in many, so the report count runs well ahead of the storm count.

Golf ball size or larger accounts for 39 of those reports, spread over the 22 days. Only 2015 and 2022 passed without one. Spread across the window, that averages more than one golf ball day a year.

The ceiling is just as steady. The largest stone on file is 2.5 inches. It fell on June 26, 2016, and again on September 23, 2023. Reports at baseball size, 2.75 inches or larger, total zero.

That matters for repair. Moderate stones tend to leave rounder, shallower dents than giant ones. Round dents with the paint intact are good candidates for PDR. Sharp creases and cracked paint are not, whatever size made them.

The newest 1 inch day in the file is September 16, 2025. SPC can still revise its 2025 file.

Busy days and thin ones

The busiest golf ball day here was April 13, 2018, with 11 reports. Stones topped out at 2 inches, and 14 metro cities logged hail that day.

Two recent days came close. On May 8, 2024, the count was 10, again topping out at 2 inches. Then on May 19, 2025, another 10 followed, peaking at golf ball size, on a day that reached 13 cities.

The record size came back on September 23, 2023. Only three reports came in that day, but one of them reached 2.5 inches. A thin report count does not mean a gentle storm.

The storms of March 13, 2024, show how hail can miss. That day brought reports of 3.5 inch stones near Shawnee and Kansas City, Kansas. Near Overland Park, the largest was 2 inches, from just two reports. A few miles changed what landed on the cars parked below.

A season that runs to October

May leads with 46 of the 153 reports. April adds 28 and March 13. Then the record stays busy into summer. June holds 25, September 17, August 11 and July 9. October even shows four.

Together, June through September carry 62 reports, about 40 percent of the total. Spring is still the main season here. Summer is not a safe stretch, though. In 2021, three golf ball days fell in July, August and September. Our Kansas City hail season post covers the wider metro pattern.

For a car that lives outside, that means a long watch. The risk opens in March and does not really close until October.

Overland Park sits in Johnson County. US 69 and Interstate 435 both cross the city. Leawood lies to the east, along State Line Road and the Missouri border. Prairie Village lies to the northeast.

Leawood and Prairie Village each have a page with their own record. Every one of Leawood's 17 golf ball days also shows up in Overland Park's file.

Nobody asks you to lose a day driving to a shop, since the crew comes to your Overland Park driveway or office lot.

Your next step in Overland Park

Find the dents first. Walk around the car and look at the roof, hood and trunk lid from a low angle. Then have a technician log each panel properly. At the estimate, you hear which dents PDR can take out and which ones it cannot. You hear it before any work starts. For each limit in plain words, see what PDR cannot fix. Hail runs through comprehensive coverage, and your policy sets the deductible. How the process runs lays out each stage. Call for a free assessment and get that list.

Hail Repair Questions in Overland Park

Nobody can say for certain. SPC hail reports depend on people seeing hail and sending it in. A large city with plenty of spotters tends to produce more reports than a quiet rural stretch. Overland Park is big and busy, so part of its lead may reflect more eyes on the sky. Either way, the dents on your hood are just as real.

Close, but not the same. Leawood logged 17 golf ball days to Overland Park's 22, and Prairie Village logged 16. Prairie Village also has a 2.75 inch report from March 13, 2024, while Overland Park never reached baseball size. Each circle catches different storms at its edges. If you park in either neighbor, its own page carries its own record.

Often, but size alone does not settle it. What matters is the shape of each dent and the state of the paint over it. A round dent with the paint intact is usually workable. A sharp crease, a crack in the paint or a dent on a braced seam may not come out fully. You hear which is which when the car is assessed, before anything is signed.
